Allergies Aren't Just Seasonal—How Your Immune System Can Get Stuck in Overdrive

MP

Mark Pruitt, APRN, FNP

Founder & CEO, Allerim

When most people think of allergies, they picture springtime sneezing or peanut warnings—but allergic disease is far more complex. Modern research has revealed that allergy and immune dysregulation are often intertwined with broader issues like autoimmunity, asthma, eczema, and even mood disorders.

At the center of many allergic and inflammatory disorders is an imbalance in Th2 immune activity—a pathway that drives IgE production, histamine release, and eosinophilic inflammation. In some individuals, this pathway becomes dominant, keeping the immune system in a chronic "alert" state, even in the absence of clear threats.

What Influences This Immune Imbalance?

This immune imbalance can be influenced by:

  • Environmental allergen exposure
  • Gut microbiome shifts
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Chronic stress and nervous system dysregulation

The Hopeful Part: Immune Tolerance Can Be Retrained

One of the most promising interventions is Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)—a method of delivering small, safe doses of allergens under the tongue to re-educate the immune system over time. Unlike antihistamines or steroid sprays that only manage symptoms, SLIT addresses the root by promoting regulatory T-cell (Treg) activity and reducing overactive responses.

Studies have shown SLIT to be effective not only for allergic rhinitis and asthma, but also in modulating broader immune responses with minimal side effects3,4.

At Allerim, we use both classic and custom SLIT protocols—often informed by precise IgE testing and patient-specific symptom patterns. When combined with gut support, metabolic regulation, and nervous system calming strategies, SLIT becomes a central tool in our inflammation recovery model.
