The Hidden Connection Between Food Sensitivities and Chronic Inflammation

MP

Mark Pruitt, APRN, FNP

"Everything looks normal."

That's the phrase too many patients hear when they're struggling with persistent fatigue, bloating, brain fog, or skin issues. Standard labs and conventional allergy tests often miss the nuanced interactions between the immune system and food. But emerging science shows a more complex picture—where chronic, low-grade inflammation driven by food sensitivity can play a major role in long-term health.

Unlike classic food allergies (which trigger immediate, IgE-mediated responses), food sensitivities often involve delayed immune reactions—particularly IgG4 antibodies. These responses may not cause hives or anaphylaxis, but they can contribute to chronic symptoms over time through immune complex formation and low-grade inflammation in the gut and other tissues.

Several studies have explored the clinical utility of IgG4 testing in patients with IBS, migraines, eczema, and other inflammatory conditions. While debate exists in the allergy community, research has shown that elimination diets based on IgG4-guided panels can lead to significant symptom reduction in some individuals1,2.

At Allerim, we use a precision-based algorithm to determine which foods are worth testing—avoiding over-testing and unnecessary restrictions. Our goal is to identify meaningful patterns in your immune response, then guide you toward sustainable, evidence-informed solutions.

For many patients, this deeper dive into food-immune interactions is the missing piece in their health puzzle.
